Here on the frontier, There are falling leaves, Although my neighbors are all barbarions…And you? You are a thousand miles away. There are always two cups on my table.

One should feel safe in their own neighborhood, wouldn’t you agree?

In my zip code there are 157 registered sex offenders.

People (if you can call them that), that have raped children, hurt them

sexually and get their nuts off on trading pictures of naked children.

The second thing that bugs me are the innocent parents who stupidly put their children out on nthe sidewalk hailing down cars to buy a cup of lemonade.

I stopped today by a little girl to buy a cup.

I never got out of my car. She reached in the car window to hand me the cup.

I held back the the money so she had to reach in again.

I asked her, “If I wanted to know your name, or how old you were or where you lived, what would you say?”

“Well I live right here at 34 Ivy Drive, I’m 8 years old and my name is Emily.”

You’re a smart girl. Where’s your mama.

I went to the door.

I tried as gently as possible to talk with the mom.  This neighborhood just isn’t safe for her child to be on the street like that.

“Oh I am watching her from the window.”

Lady, while you’re watching from the window. I’ve hauled her into my car.

Think about it.

I left with a loud “Who in the hell do your think you are!!!” Ringing behind me.

157 registered sexual offenders in my zipcode.

How many in yours?

This is gmom,

peace out.

  1. Wow that is a lot, how did you find out how many sex offenders there are in your area? Just a google search?
Good for you for talking to the parent, even though she didn’t seem to appreciate it now maybe one day she will!

  2. Well I googled it and there were 10 sex offenders living in my town in 2010, which is “a lot smaller than the state average” apparently.

  3. When I went to the registry and put in my zipcode I found several in my neighborhood and one who lives around the corner! I can see his backyard from mine! Forewarned is forearmed. Hoo won’t be riding his trike anywhere near that house!

  4. There is a registered offender caddy-corner to the elementary school that I attended. I don’t get how he gets away with that. I may be a terrible mom for doing this, but I showed Noah pictures of the people to steer clear of should they ever end up walking past him while he’s riding his bike in the neighborhood. Call me crazy.

    • I don’t think you’re crazy at all. Crazy is not informing our children that sick poeple are out there and life isn’t perfect.
Putting a vulnerable child in harms way is what crazy is.
What also concerns me Kim is these registries are the people that have been prosecuted. How many more are out there that we don’t know about.

  5. This post startled me – in a good way. While gathered for the shuttle launch, I looked at all the people and wondered how many may be questionable. I try to keep the boys alert, without creating a paranoia. It’s a fine line, but I think it is better to straddle the line vs. not approaching it at all, if that makes any sense.

    • I get you Lenore. I used to have a hard time sending my boys into men’s bathrooms unescorted.

I did educate my kids young, and I am by no means saying what anyone else should do, but they are all prepared and aware of what’s out there.

The Jaycee Dugard abduction may have happened some time ago, but it is very relevent.
I hope all parents are speaking to their kids.

  6. What you don’t know could carry a high price, right? Well written post.
