Here on the frontier, There are falling leaves, Although my neighbors are all barbarions…And you? You are a thousand miles away. There are always two cups on my table.

Cujo The Dog, MSW Petting Optional

Say something Cujo

For the second time in as many weeks a young woman showed up unannounced at my door. The first time she came she  said she was returning a CD that was borrowed long ago. She lingered (in the middle of my workday) until finally I asked her if she was running away from home. Lingering? I don’t know what to do with. Running away? I can handle. She left quickly after I asked. My kids always say I’m too blunt.

Today when she showed up  there was no CD to return. It was just her.

“Running away again?”

Can I just come in for a while. I just need a place to cry and have some quiet.

I sat with her for a moment while she pet ‘Cujo The Dog’.

“Do you want to talk?”

No, but can Cujo stay with me?

I showed her to the den, gave her a box of tissues and a drink.  She patted the couch next to her and Cujo jumped up and settled in by her side (traitor).  Furry traitor.

About 2 hours later I heard her call to me that she was leaving.  She smiled as she bid her farewell to ‘Cujo The Dog’.

I don’t get it. Cujo is alright as dogs go but when I share my problems with him he lies on the floor and puts his head under the couch.

“Hey, You’re suppose to be helping me here, not hiding under the couch!”

Oh well, that’s life in the fast lane. What we can’t do for each other we can sometimes do for a stranger.

Norway. Now What. Gmom’s Thought’s From Baltimore

For those following my blog.

Husband is home.

Mission accomplished.

I may be able to loan him out to FEMA. He is good.

It’s quiet in Baltimore tonight. Warm and sweet. Cujo and I are doing our usual patrolling of the grounds. Heat lightning is firing every few minutes.

Unless you live under a rock you have heard about the atrocity that happened in Norway on Friday. A lunatic planting bombs in Oslo then went on a killing spree at a youth camp.

Security is not tight in a country unused to such violence and better known for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize and mediating in conflicts, including the Middle East and Sri Lanka.

Breaks gmom’s heart.

Man dresses up like a police officer to gain access to the summer camp than mows down the kids with an automatic weapon.

In Boro Park, New York a few weeks ago, 8-year-old Leiby Kletsky walking home from day camp was picked up by a man who murdered and dismembered him. He put the boy’s body part’s in a red suitcase and kept the child’s feet in his freezer for himself.

In the search for Leiby, 3000 people hit the streets. A store’s surveillance camera caught the boy going with the man in to his car leading the police to resolution of the case. The boy was an orthodox Jew, the man he went with wore a yarmulke and looked liked an orthodox Jew.

Here in Baltimore recently there were 3 cases of men banging on residents doors saying, “Baltimore City Police,open up.” And the people did. People were tied up, men were shot, homes ransacked.

Use to be you could tell children if you are lost go to a woman.

(Now we have Casey Anthony on the street)

Use to be you could tell children if you are lost go to someone in a uniform.

It’s a different world.

What do we tell our children now?

peace out.

Alcohol: It’s What’s For Dinner. Featuring Cujo The Dog

Cujo The Dog Ready For A Fun Evening

Husband is gone for the duration.  Saving lives, solving problems, hopefully not reading this.

Me. I’m enjoying a nice summery beverage.

Whiskey straight.

Straight out of the bottle  while standing at the kitchen sink in case I gag. Bad reflex when one is not use to drinking. I use to drink. Pretty pink and soft snowy colored drinks with fruit. Dressed up with girlfriends, going out,dancing, pretty, flirty.

See what happens when you have kids! You are reduced to slugging booze over the kitchen sink. Effects the same though.

I’m funnier, I’m pretty and I’m great company. Just ask Cujo the dog, who by the way has suddenly learned English. I know! I (hic) can’t believe it either!

Say something Cujo

I in turn have learned to bark. So between his English and my barking we’ve pretty much got the dictionary covered.

It turns out Cujo greatly resents my keeping an organic kitchen, and frankly I can’t seem to remember why I do either.

I don’t really care about cows. I’d eat most any animal if it’s seared properly and has a nice char.

Cujo! Come back here! Play inside.

Cujo would be yummy I bet.

Americans, we don’t eat dogs or cats.

It’s a cultural thing.

In the Asiatic countries people eat all sorts of crap delectable yummies. Monkeys, dogs (including border collies) bats, snakes.

Cujo let's pretend your the crinimal and I'm an (hic) ociffer.

I’m certain if Taco Bell made a Border Collie Burrito we’d all be chowing down no problemo.

Juco why you hanging with Bart inside come on don't be ascared-redy-cat.thing

Where my little buddy Cujo go?

 Cujo, here Cujo.

I dunno whas goin on with Cujo. He usually (hic) very friendly.

———————————————————————————————————–

Cujo actually goes in and out of the house through the opening in the screen at the door.

Alas, since last evening he has lost all ability to speak..and won’t come near me.

I’m sure in a few weeks he’ll get over it.

This is gmom,

peace out.

Down The Rabbit Hole

For all  of you following my blog husband is still away overseas.

Here is what has changed at  home while the man who holds the string of your kite is gone.

Number one: You might accidentally kill one or  2 of your children.

Normally, in the night Bart comes in, he drives ones of the biofuel trucks and comes in at 3 or 4 a.m. I’ll half wake up and hear him kick off his shoes, shuffle into the shower, scrounge around the kitchen and go to bed.

But without husband here, I immediately reach for the gun.

I go up the stairs gun poised, ready to defend against any intruder. It never dawns on me that Cujo is upstairs happily bopping around.

Bart turns and sees me. Without a word he takes the gun out of my hands, removes the clip and tells me to go back to bed before I hurt myself.

Okay,sorry.

Number 2: You might let your guard dog sleep on your husband’s $200 Brooks Brother’s robe, maybe even on the bed.Everyone needs to be special sometimes.

Number 3: You might stop taking showers  often. I mean what’s the point? This goes for changing into nighties as well.

Number 4: You may suddenly realize that a plate of french fries makes a perfectly good dinner, even better while eaten in front of the TV.

Number 5: You may realize that you don’t have to water the “effing lawn everyday, or pick up your dog’s  poop. I mean who made these rules anyway? Poop is organic..it’s like compost.

Number 6: Turns out you don’t have to go and check on your neighbor just because it’s 103F outside. Just a big “ole, hope you’re still alive Edna!  Yelled out an open window does just fine.

Number 7: You have the opportunity to go though all husband’s secret guy stuff. Unfortunately this has yielded nothing! Nothing!

I hope this give you some good ideas for the next time your superhero flies off.

This is gmom.

Down the rabbit hole.

peace out.

Ah the joys of nothingness………..

Damn dog.

Down Cujo.

Down!

The Artful Dodger’s Weekend: Hoo At Home

Hoo peering through the peep hole of the high chair.

Hoo’s Momma went away for a few days.

Gmom, Rose and Grandpa took over.

We are having a busy but awesome time.

We bought a Hoo- size motorcycle to amuse him so if he had a meltdown we had a good distraction handy.But the boy is doing fine, so we just gave it to him.

He did take one spill off of it which required a band- aid,several kisses and quick application of one dum-dum lollipop.

The toe scrape was from chasing Cujo with a handful of  sand from the sandbox.

For a special treat we let Hoo use a real screwdriver to meddle in the workings of a broken fan. It’s his current mechanical obsession. Anytime he started walking away with the screwdriver I say, Hoo get back to fixing that fan or give me the tool. He would give me his blue eyed grin and get straight back to work on the fan. I expect with all the banging it will be be working again in due time.

We have watched a fair bit of Baby Einstein videos both in English and Spanish.

The English versions are quite lovely with Pachelbel Canon in D Minor playing beautifully while a soft female voice recites barnyard animal names. The pictures show sweet images of baby cows, chicks and horses.

The Spanish version has the theme to Mama Mia playing with a child reciting animal names.

Rat, snake, iguana and turtle.

I don’t know what to make of that.

Hoo watching Baby Einstein vids

It’s been busy. But a lot of fun.

Hope your weekend was good.

Peace out from Hooville.

When You’re Weary New Mothers:Verse To Carry You Through

“Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

This verse carried me through many hours of countless sleepless nights while rocking the tiny despot to sleep.

The first baby. The angel I eagerly awaited, finally born.

There must be some mistake!!!

“The Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.”

I definitely..MOST DEFINITELY ordered a baby that came with a circadian rhythm!

Not only was she the clear winner in the “most crying ever done by a newborn”,  contest she was not cute…at..all!

The first picture I have of her and me shows both of us red eyed and distinctly unhappy.

My little ugly crying baby.

But I loved her.  I tried hard to learn everything I could that somehow didn’t come naturally to me about babies.

Getting pregnant and being sweet in maternity clothes was light years away from holding a real live ‘ Enfant Terrible’.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, He makes me lie down in green pastures, He restores my soul.”

I don’t know when life began to change from one endless unthinkable level of exhausted despair to one of watching her pick a neighbor’s green heirloom tomato and deposit it cheerfully into my lap.

When the neighbor whose name was Eden, I kid you not, yelled over “Mrs. Gmom, please get China out of my garden!” It was not a hard stretch for me to pretend I had lost all grasp of the English language spoken at normal decibels.

China, she grew beautiful and smart and never learned to sleep well.

But I learned to accept her for who she was.  Independent spirit, frugal with her smiles, and the girl who at 5 made sure her hairclips matched her panties.

She survived my inexperience, uncertainty and youth.

She is a mother now with a little Mussolini of her own.

I’m happy to offer my well honed patient hand to rock her little one.

I know the little girl will be beautiful like her mom.

I know she will teach her mother all she needs to knows about patience, endurance and love beyond reason.

Because that’s what her mother taught me.

“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,

and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,

and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;

and a little child shall lead them.”

This is gmom,

Peace out.

Snow Day Cinnamon Raisin Oatmeal Cookies

Cujo The Dog

Another cold day in Baltimore.

Snow coming in this evening.

Freezing rain all day tomorrow.

Ho-hum.

Cujo and I have a little peace and quiet for a change.

Hoo has started day care while his mama gone back to college to finish her degree.

I can see the dust settling on the floor.

In the quiet and relative light of these few hours I’m baking some cookies and reading “Little Bee”.

Treating myself to a good cup of coffee and life is alright today.

Draw a breath mamas.

The door will be banging open any minute.

Let the cookies cool.

Oatmeal Cookies From Cujo and Gmom

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blend together:
3/4 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
Add in:
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
Once that is all mixed. Using a large spoon mix in:
3 cups of whole oats (not the quick cooking variety)
1 cup of raisins
1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Handmix until the batter is combined. don’t overwork this batter.
Drop by spoonfuls on cookie sheet and bake at 340 F for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.
That is not a typo.
350 F is just a bit too hot for this recipe and leaves a sticky middle and burnt edges on the cookies. 340F seems to work just right.
Happy snow day US.
From gmom and Cujo  in Baltimore to you.
Baked Butternut Squash Recipe(Thanksgiving)
The tools to attack the butternut squash.
The big day is coming and cooking ahead makes life so much easier!
The Chef may or may not be frying the turkey ’cause it looks like rain here in B’more.
I may just slow roast it.
But I love nothing better than to sit with the kids and watch the Macy’s Day parade on TV, and then (I know this is so lame…) the International Dog Show.
I’m probably the only person without a competitor watching.
But me and Cujo we just loves it!
So I don’t want to be in kitchen the whole day.
I want my chocolate spoon in my good Ghiardelli hot cocoa and some french toast.
Maybe some caramel popcorn during the day.
But to get that free time and still have a meal for 15 people come late afternoon I have to cook today (and yesterday).
This side dish of baked butternut squash is another seasonal good one that goes nicely with the traditional foods of Thanksgiving.
Just be careful when you are cutting this hard squash up you don’t cut yourself.
You can soften it first by cooking it in the microwave for a few minutes first then proceeding with the recipe.
If you do that be sure to pierce the squash deeply so if pressure builds inside it doesn’t explode all over the place.
Directions:
Peel the butternut squash and cut it into cubes.
After the squash is peeled cut it into cubes. There will be seeds in a center pocket that you can discard.
Dice up 1/2 cup of an onion.
Put the butternut squash into a baking dish.
Toss with 1/2 cup of oil.
Put the onion over the squash pieces and sprinkle on salt, pepper and a teaspoon of sugar.
The squah and onions seasoned and ready to bake.
Cover tightly with aluminum foil.
Into the oven you go covered snugly with aluminum foil
Bake at 350 for 40 minutes.
Take foil off and continue baking until squash is fork tender, about 15 minutes.
If you are making this dish ahead of time don’t do the last 15 minutes of bake time.
When you reheat the dish on Thursday prior to the meal you will finish off the baking then.
That’s it another yum dish to serve on your Thanksgiving table.
The finished dish after baking uncovered the last 15 minutes will have browned edges and be so yummy.
Enjoy WP friends.
Happy Thanksgiving!
From gmom and Hoo and Cujo the dog.
